A Reliable Way to Set Grid Section for TOS

Usually it is pretty straightforward to find the right grid section on TOS, but sometimes it’s elusive and hard to figure out where the grid is relative to price.  Here is a technique that will reliably allow you to figure out the right grid section every time.  It may have a few steps, but it removes uncertainty.  We start with an example showing a chart of RUT.

In this example, FibGrid is on the chart but cannot be seen because the grid section is set to 1.

So we will go to the “Style” menu and click “Settings” to bring up the style settings dialog.  Turn on the “fit studies” option which will expand the chart range so that includes room for both price and the all studies, including FibGrid.

Once both price and the grid are showing, it is easy to see that the grid is below prices.  This means that the grid section needs to be increased.  If the grid lines had been above prices then we would need to decrease the grid section.

The easiest way to make adjustments is to position the edit studies dialog so that you can see a portion of the chart at the same time.   Here, grid section has been increased to 3 but the grid lines are still below price, so we need to increase more.

With the grid section set to 4, price is now between grid lines.  Even though this isn’t how we want our chart to look, it confirms that we have the right grid section set.  We are done setting the parameters for FibGrid.  All we need to do to make the chart look right is go back in to the “style settings” dialog and turn off “fit studies.”

That’s it.  FibGrid is now set with the proper grid section for RUT.  There are a few steps, but when the right grid section is otherwise elusive, this technique will get you to proper settings quickly and reliably.
